Happy Holidays 2022 stream! 🎄🎅💾
I drank some hot tea and played a few holiday DOS games to celebrate 2022’s final week.
System Shock OLD and NEW
I play through the first level of both classic and updated *demo* versions of System Shock!
Under a Killing Moon demo
A non-interactive part of “Under A Killing Moon” (Access Software, 1994) demo that I found on the CD for “Virtual Reality Madness… and More” book.
Quest for Glory I demo
Here’s a short non-interactive demo of Sierra On-Line’s 1992 VGA remake of the first Quest for Glory game. And here’s the demo of the original 1989 EGA version: Download both demos here: https://www.scummvm.org/demos/
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis demo
Here’s a pretty cool Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (Lucasarts, 1992) interactive demo. A choice of the part is somewhat surprising, as this is something that happens rather late in the game (Spoilers!). I’ve decided to stick with MT-32 music for this one. A slightly larger than the floppy demo in file size, […]
Full Throttle demo
Here’s an interactive demo of Full Throttle (Lucasarts, 1995). This huge (over 170 megabytes) demo was obviously meant for coverdisks, and despite its size is rather short. It’s just a few interactive sequences sandwiched between two in-engine trailers for the game. Most interesting thing is the narration that was recorded specifically for this demo, and […]
Creative Music System animated demos & music
Creative Music System (later repackaged as “Game Blaster”) was Creative Labs’ first attempt at entering the IBM PC sound device market. While it offered interesting features for the time, such as stereo sound, its not exactly impressive square-wave music synthesis and limited software support contributed to its failure, as AdLib was winning the customers over. […]
MicroProse Christmas Cards
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from DOS Nostalgia! Here are two electronic Christmas cards from MicroProse, distributed on their BBS. Recorded with General MIDI music. Download them here: 1993: https://archive.org/details/1993MicroProseChristmasCard_1020 1994: https://archive.org/details/1994MicroProseChristmasCard_1020
Elvira non-interactive demo
Here’s a spooky rolling demo of Elvira (Horror Soft/Accolade, 1990) just in time for this Halloween season. Download the demo here: https://archive.org/details/ElviraMistressoftheDark_1020
Maniac Mansion non-interactive demos
A rolling demos of DOS versions of Maniac Mansion (Lucasfilm Games, 1988/1989). All new custom dialogue & situation. Pretty funny stuff. Dialogue is identical in both versions. Original: Enhanced: Download demos: https://archive.org/details/ManiacMansionDemo
Space Quest 1 VGA non-interactive demo
A rolling demo for Space Quest I: Roger Wilco in the Sarien Encounter (Sierra On-Line, 1991). Get it here: https://archive.org/details/SpaceQuestTheSarienEncounterDemo
Wing Commander non-interactive demo
A rolling demo for Wing Commander (ORIGIN Systems, 1990). Download the demo here: https://archive.org/details/WingCommander_1020
Space Quest 5 non-interactive demo
A non-interactive demo of Space Quest V: The Next Mutation. Interesting because of a few unique resources and its use of Dynamix’s in-house adventure tools instead of Sierra’s engine that the final game uses. Download the demo here: http://scummvm.org/demos/
Lost in Time non-interactive demo
Here’s a cool little non-interactive demo of Coktel Vision’s Lost in Time (published by Sierra On-Line in the US). The demo features a neat AdLib tune by Charles Callet that isn’t found in the full game. You can download this and other Coktel Vision demos here: http://scummvm.org/demos/
Autodesk 3D Studio R3 presentation
Non-interactive demonstration of the features of 3D modelling software. Download the executable here: https://archive.org/details/3DSDEMO
Heroes of Might and Magic non-interactive demo
A little while ago I stumbled upon this non-interactive demo of the first Heroes game. I was surprised that It was nearly 200 megabytes in size, since nobody would be crazy enough to download that much in 1995. Turns out it was made for CES 1995. So here it is. Enjoy. Download demo here: http://www.dosnostalgia.com/files/heroes1ces.zip
Conquests of the Longbow talkie demo
Apparently at one point Sierra was developing a talkie version of Conquests of the Longbow: The Legend of Robin Hood, but the project was cancelled. This short non-interactive demo is all that survived.
Creative Labs Sound Blaster demos
Check out these two demos Creative Labs made for their Sound Blaster cards: A cheesy “The Elements” one for Sound Blaster Pro And a simple, yet cool one for Sound Blaster 16
Sierra On-Line Holiday Cards
A collection of electronic holiday cards from Sierra On-Line.
MadSpace demo version
MadSpace is a Russian first person shooter developed by Maddox Games and published by Auric Vision in 1997. The game has quite a few unique features including non-Euclidean geometry, 3D glasses support, speech recognition & multiplayer up to 16 players. Although the game was published in Russia as well as some other territories (in English), […]
